Abstract
Pastes are prepared by treating finely ground wood-hydrolysis lignin or a finely ground natural product containing, in addition to lignin, cellulose or a conversion product thereof which is insoluble in alkalis, but capable of swelling therein, with an aqueous solution of an alkali hydroxide, the finely ground lignin or natural product having a particle size such that the greater part of the particles is smaller than 0.05 mm. The paste may also contain an organic solvent while the natural product may be brown coal or peat. A dry mixture of the lignin or natural product and an alkali hydroxide, and, if desired, a wetting agent, e.g. sodium di-isobutylnaphthalene sulphonate may be formed into a paste with water. Specified organic solvents are methanol, ethyl alcohol, acetone, diacetone alcohol, mesityl oxide, isophorone, dioxane, chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons, and also solutions of paraffin wax in hydrocarbons such as benzene. Specified alkali hydroxide treating mucous are sodium or potassium hydroxide, aqueous ammonia, a mixture of calcium hydroxide and either sodium carbonate or sodium sulphate.ALSO:A process for removing coating compositions comprises treating the material to be cleansed with a paste prepared by treating finely ground wood-hydrolysis lignin or a finely ground natural product containing, in addition to lignin, cellulose or a conversion product thereof which is insoluble in alkalis but capable of swelling therein with an aqueous solution of an alkali hydroxide, the finely ground lignin or natural product having a particle size such that the greater part of the particles is smaller than 0.05 mm. The paste may also contain an organic solvent while the natural product may be brown coal or peat.
