Abstract

A coating composition comprises a mixture of zinc dust and alkali silicate solution in which the zinc dust is coated with a film which is relatively stable under the alkaline conditions encountered in the alkali silicate solution. The film may comprise paraffin wax, castor oil, carnauba wax, beeswax, alkyd resin, urea-formaldehyde resin, sodium sulphide, ammonium sulphide, ammonium carbonate, potassium sulphide, an alkali iodate, or an alkali phosphate, e.g. disodium hydrogen phosphate. The preferred ratio of alkali oxide to silica in the silicate in moles. is within the range 1/2.3 to 1/3.0. The solution may be prepared by mixing zinc dust with the solution of the film-forming material to form a stiff paste, allowing the solvent to evaporate, so coating the zinc, and then mixing this with the silicate. Specified solvents are acetone, butanol and benzol. Red lead, in amounts not greater than 3 grammes per 100 grammes of zinc dust may also be present in the composition.
