Abstract
A dry powder composition suitable for mixing with water to form a paint or distemper comprises a mixture of pigment particles and water-soluble binder particles, both types of particles being coated with a water-repellent oil. The oil may be kerosene, heavy naphtha, white spirit, thin spindle oil or a thin drying oil. Suitable binders are water-soluble cellulose derivatives, starches, dextrins, casein or alginates. Specified pigments are titanium dioxide, chalk, barium sulphate, zinc oxide, and lithopone; coloured pigments may be used in addition. Fillers such as wood flour and asbestos floats may be added. The compositions may also contain an emulsifying agent for the oil. The oil may contain waxes or natural or synthetic resins in solution, and dryers, e.g. metallic naphthenates.
