Abstract

A composition suitable for coating photographic paper comprises a suspension of barium sulphate in an aqueous dispersion of a binder therefor, the binder consisting of 25 to 100 per cent of styrene-butadiene copolymer, this percentage being the proportion by dry weight of the copolymer to the total dry weight of binder used. The remainder, if any, of the binder is preferably gelatine. Copolymer latex may be mixed with an aqueous dispersion of barium sulphate which may contain a hardener such as formaldehyde, glyoxal, water-soluble melamine-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde or maleamic acid-styrene-ammonia resin, or chromium chloride.
