Abstract

715,072. Ball bearings; lubricating. REID, G. H. April 13, 1953 [Jan. 11, 1952], No. 941/52. Addition to 705,655. Classes 12(1) and 12(3) A gyroscopic instrument has its gyro-rotor element 24 mounted in a gimbal frame 14 by means of a bearing assembly comprising a spigot race member 44 on the gyrorotor spindle. a cup. race member 45 screwthreaded into the gimbal frame 14, a circular row of balls 50 interposed between the members 44 and 45, and an annular flange 36 on the frame 14 which co-operates with a boss 56 on the rotor element 24 to form a seal protecting the bearing from foreign matter. Alternatively the flange 36 may co-operate with a groove in the element 24. The race 45 is mounted in a screwed plug 46 which contains a cavity 51 in which is disposed oil impregnated material 49. The cavity is closed by a plate 52. A ball 48 is a loose fit in a bore communicating with the balls 50, so that oil may flow from the wad 49 to lubricate the bearing.
