A mounting for the oillubricated ball or roller bearing of a rotatable shaft comprises a central member adapted to receive the outer race of the bearing and inner and outer covers to this central member, the inner cover having an annular wall surrounding the rotary shaft and extending towards the bearing to provide an annular well of sufficient capacity to contain all the oil required for lubricating the bearing in its position of use and into which oil from the bearing flows when the mounting is moved into a position with the inner cover below the central member. The bearing 3 is mounted in an aperture in the machine casing 5, which constitutes the central member, and is closed by an outer cover 6 having an annular flange 7 seating within the aperture and abutting the bearing and an inner cover 27 also formed with an annular flange 26 which abuts the bearing, the two covers being retained on the casing by screws 13. The cover 27 has welded thereto a disc 29 which has integral therewith an annular flange 28 formed with a deep recess 31 to engage an annular wall 33 extending from a cylindrical member 32 which may carry an oil thrower 14. The cavity formed between the wall 25 of the cover 27 and the disc 29 and the cavity formed by the flange 7 of the cover 6 each constitute an oil well of sufficient capacity to accommodate the quantity of oil required to lubricate the bearing 3 when the mounting is inclined from its normally horizontal position of use. A spiral groove 34 may be cut in the shaft 1 to return oil to the well during running. Alternatively the bearing 3 is mounted in a central member attached to the casing, and the flange 7 may be dispensed with and the bearing retained by a spring which abuts the outer race of the bearing and the inner face of the cover 6.
