Abstract

545,917. Lubricators; bearings. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). Dec. 17, 1940, No. 17796. [Classes 12 (i) and 12 (iii)] Bearings are lubricated by an oil-laden gas whirled around by a turbulator so. as to impinge on the surface of the lubricant and then moved laterally to the bearings. The rotary-cutter shaft 24 of a boot-sole trimming machine is carried by ballbearings with outer races 16, 18 mounted in a housing 12 containing lubricant the level of which is kept below the balls and below a disc or collar 50 integral with the shaft. 'This collar' creates a turbulence in the air or gas within the housing so as to form a groove A in the surface of the lubricant. This air, becoming ladeii with lubricant, is thrown off the collar in the directions B, C towards and through the bearings and to spaces D, E behind the bearings, the oil returning by passages F, G to the sump. The outer race 18 slides in the housing under pressure from a washer 26 and springs 28. The level in the sump is maintained by a barometric oil-feeding device comprising a glass container 70 clamped into the hinged lid of an oil cup 74, the lid being secured by a bail 90 and screw 92. The level may be adjusted by washers between the cup and the container which may carry a spring-pressed valve to close the container when disengaged from the cup.
