Abstract

663,743. Lubricating bearings. LOOSEN, S. P., and FEDERATED ENGINEERS, Ltd. June 14, 1949 [May 14, 1948], No. 13326/48. Classes 12 (i) and 12 (iii). [Also in Group XXVIII] In an axle and bearing assembly of the type in which the axle has a chamber therein forming an oil reservoir which communicates with feed channels extending outwardly to the bearing surface which is supplied continuously with lubricant by centrifugal force when the axle is rotating, the axle box carries a sump from which an intermittently operating pump feeds lubricant through a conduit to the axle reservoir. As shown in Fig. 2, oil is supplied to a cavity 13 from a sump 28 through pipes 29, 31 by means of an inertia pump. Restriction plugs 24 are disposed at the ends of radial passages 14 leading to channels 15 in the bearing surface. The two part bearing housing 10 has a spring seating 20, vertical guideways and a bearing shell 11 with a suitable facing 11a which may be of babbitt metal. The ends of the cavity 13 are defined by cups 23, 23a expanded in the bore of the axle 12. Axial movement of the axle 12 is limited by a thrust plate 26 the plane of which can be set in relation to a cover-plate 19 by means of set studs 27. Absorbent cylindrical pads 35 are mounted in gaps in the wall 10a of the housing and convey oil from the sump 28 to the axle to ensure lubrication on starting. Oil returns to the sump through channels 34, and an oil sealing ring 38 and filler plug 33 are provided. In a modification where the axle extends beyond the end of the bearing, the open end of the axle is closed by a disc 39, Fig. 4, carrying a spring- loaded ball valve 40 for oil priming. A part circumferential groove 41 is provided in the bearing surface and coacts with a spring- loaded valve 43 in a radial passage 42 in the shaft 12 so that oil under pressure is admitted to the cavity 13 during the time the passage 42 passes along the groove 41.
