Abstract

708,099. Lubricating. AIR-EQUIPEMENT April 2, 1952 [April 6, 1951], No. 8456/52. Class 12(3) A lubricating system, for use in a gearbox for accessories on aircraft, is intended to ensure lubrication when the aircraft is in inverted flight, and comprises a lubricating pump fed from an oil tank in the upper part of the gearbox casing, the tank being normally supplied with oil by a drainage pump which takes the oil from the bottom of the casing, the arrangement being such that in the inverted flight position the tank is fed by gravity while the drainage pump runs idly, the intake of the lubricating pump always remaining submerged in the oil in the tank whatever may be the position of the gearbox. As shown, the drainage pump 22b, Fig. 2, withdraws oil through a passage 23 from the bottom of the casing 1 and supplies it through a passage 24 to the bottom of a tank 2. An opening 3 provides communication between the top of the tank and the inside of the casing. The lubricating pump 22a, Fig. 3, withdraws oil from the tank 2 through an outlet 25 and supplies it through pipes 26, 27 to points to be lubricated. Excess lubricant passes by a valve 28 to a pipe 29 opening into the bottom of the tank 2. The outlet 25 remains submerged when the aircraft is inverted so that the pump 22a can still function.
