Abstract

1,153,315. Lubricating. S. Z. MILLEDGE, and H. BUD. 9 Aug., 1967 [19 Aug., 1966; 1 May, 1967], Nos. 37350/66 and 20021/67. Heading F2A. [Also in Division G1] A lubricating system comprises a sump 3 in which a predetermined oil level is to be maintained, and an oil reservoir 1, an oil pipe 2 extending from the bottom of the reservoir to below said oil level and an air pipe 4 extending from the top to said oil level, the pressure in the reservoir being maintained at a lower value than that in the sump. Thus, expansion of air in the reservoir 1 will not raise the level in the sump. In Fig. 1 the system is in an I.C. engine and tube 5 connects the top of the reservoir with the induction manifold through a one-way valve, to draw air from the reservoir. If the oil level in sump 3 drops, the end of pipe 4 is uncovered and oil flows down pipe 2 until the end of pipe 4 is again at the predetermined oil level. Oil may be added to the reservoir by putting it in the sump. If the sump is sealed at above atmospheric pressure, tube 5 is replaced by a vent to atmosphere. In Figs. 3 and 5 (not shown), air tube 11 and oil tube 16 extend into the dipstick hole.
