Abstract

1355767 Cooling IC engines J L GRATZMULLER 5 May 1972 [13 May 1971] 20934/72 Heading F4U I.C. engine cooling device comprises a pressurized liquid cooling circuit, the circuit being adapted to be pressurized by a compressed air reservoir connected to the upper part of the circuit by a conduit fitted with units to regulate the pressure in the circuit and an automatic cut-off valve which is responsive to the pressure in the reservoir and which closes when the reservoir pressure falls to a minimum predetermined value. The engine block 1 is connected by flow and return pipes 2, 4 and 6 to a radiator 3, and a header tank 7 which is connected by a conduit 16 to .the pressurized air reservoir 12 for the vehicle braking system. Pressure in the reservoir is maintained by an engine driven pump 13 and pressure regulator 14. In the conduit 16 there is a reducing valve 19 which opens only when the pressure downstream of the valve falls below a predetermined value, and a valve 18 which is sensitive only to the difference in pressure upstream and downstream of the valve and which also includes a flow limiter 23. The valve 17 is an automatic cut-off valve, the valve member 20 of which is carried by a diaphragm 21 having one surface exposed to the pressure of the air in the reservoir and the other surface open to atmosphere and biased by a compression spring 21<SP>1</SP> to move the valve member 20 to the closed position. The valve is arranged to close as soon as the reservoir pressure falls below the pressure P/2 at which the pump 13 is started by the regulator 14, thus preventing a loss of pressure from the reservoir to the cooling system if the reservoir pressure is below the value P/2. The cooling system pressure is always lower than the pressure P/2.
