[Class 12 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] In a splash lubricated internal combustion engine particularly for driving centrifugal pumps for fire extinguishing purposes where heavy loads are imposed immediately after starting, an excess of lubrication is obtained at starting and for a predetermined time hereafter by filling the crankcase a to a starting level e above the normal running level d, the excess oil being 'drawn by a pump g through pipe i and fed to the reservoir f from which is can return to the crankcase through the holes k' at a restricted rate or overflow through the pipe k. The pipes are connected to the socket b containing a dipstick c marked for the two oil levels.
