Abstract

870,663. Bearings. GLACIER METAL CO. Ltd. July 21, 1959 [Aug. 5, 1958], No. 25111/58. Class 12 (1). In a plain bearing assembly comprising a journal member 1, 2 attached to a shaft 5 and having a substantially spherical bearing surface and a bearing member in two parts 9, 12 surrounding and supporting the journal member, annular oil distribution grooves 20 are provided in the bearing member. Similar grooves 8 are provided in the journal member but these are offset towards the central plane of the bearing. The lower part 9 of the bearing member is formed to provide a sump which comprises longitudinally-extending passages 18, 19 connecting the lower parts of the grooves 20. On rotation of the journal, oil from the sump is supplied to the bearing surfaces via a central annular groove 22, catchment grooves 23 and oil distribution grooves 24. The bearing also includes flexible sealing rings 17, a window 25 through which the level of oil in the sump may be observed, a filling plug 26 and drain plugs 27. In a modification, shown in Fig. 6, the passage 19 and oil-feed groove 22 are omitted and, instead, cavities 29 communicating with the passages 18 are provided.
