Class 69 (3) A combustion chamber 1 contains a glow plug 6, and is fed with fuel and air through a carburettor 4 and a non-return valve 5 respectively, and a succession of rhythmic explosions are produced, the resultant gases of which are exhausted through a tube 2 to which liquid is fed. Spray liquid in a tank 8 is pressurized from the combustion chamber via a pipe 9 and a non-return valve 9a, and liquid is delivered through a valve 12 and pipe 10 to a nozzle 11 in the exhaust tube. The tube and chamber are surrounded by a tube 14 which extends forwardly of the exhaust tube outlet, so that air drawn into the annular passage L from an adjustable inlet 15 is heated and delivered to the said outlet. The length of that part of the tube 14 extending beyond the end of the exhaust tube 2 is adjustable by means of an axially movable extension piece 18 which, together with adjustable air inlets 17 and 20 provided in the tubes 14 and 2 respectively, effects variation of the exhaust gas temperature and the rhythm of the explosions. In Fig. 2 the spray liquid is introduced through an annular nozzle 25 disposed in front of the exhaust tube outlet, and the nozzle comprises adjustable parts 30, 31 providing a variable outlet s. A tubular extension 32 may be secured to the nozzle and provided with apertures 33 which may be closed by a ring 34. An attachment 35 may close the covering tube 24, Fig. 2, after removal of an adjustable extension 26 and an associated protective tube 27. The tank 8 or pipe 10 may be adjustably heated by the excess heat of the machine.
