Abstract

791,990. Igniting burners. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. March 19, 1956 [March 28, 1955], No. 8538/56. Classes 75(1) and 75(3) An ignition device for a jet propulsion unit designed to operate at high altitudes comprises a cylindrical carburation chamber 8 supplied with preheated compressed air through peripheral air inlets 9 orientated to cause the air to whirl, a sleeve 11 of permeable material extending along the axis of the chamber and fed with liquid fuel under pressure whereby droplets of fuel leak' through the sleeve and are vaporized by the air, and means, such as a rod 18 of refractory electrically-resisting metal at a high temperature, or igniting the mixture of air and vaporized fuel issuing as a jet from a nozzle 10 on the carburation chamber. The device ignites a main fuel injector 2 in a flame tube 1 and is mounted in a sleeve 13 extending across the space between the flame tube and an outer casing 16 supplied with air from a main compressor. The air supplied to the device is taken by a pipe 4 from the delivery side of the main compressor and is further compressed by an auxiliary compressor 5. The air is heated in perforated refractory tubes 6 carrying electrical heating resistances 7. The rod 18 is heated by an electric current flowing therethrough.
