703,914. Liquid fuel combustion chambers. FRASER, R. P. Oct. 4, 1951 [Oct. 17, 1950], No. 25305/50. Class 51 (1) In a fuel combustion apparatus comprising a chamber in the front wall of which is axially mounted a liquid fuel atomizing device adapted to project a wide angled spray means are provided to direct secondary combustion air inwardly and contra to the flow of the atomized fuel stream through passages in the rear wall of the chamber. In the apparatus shown the combustion chamber is of two opposite cones 2, 3 enclosed in outer cylindrical casings 5, 6. A mixture of primary air and fuel is ejected by the burner 7 and secondary air is blown into the chamber in a contra direction to that of the fuel mixture via a set of inlet directing guides 17 and a series of nozzles 11 the secondary air being preheated in the chamber 4 formed between the cone 3 and the casing 6 which it enters through the inlet 9<SP>1</SP>. Secondary air is also supplied to the combustion chamber through the inlet 9, the chamber formed between the cone 2 and casing 5, guides 17 and the nozzles 12. Air from the latter chamber is also caused to circulate around and thereby cool the igniter 10 and an inspection tube (not shown) before entering the combustion chamber. Air is also passed to the combustion chamber via the passages 16. The combustion chamber is lined with refractory and the nozzles 11, 12 may be of refractory or may be refractory lined steel tubes. The hot gases issuing from the outlet 8 may be used in drying apparatus. The size of the combustion chamber may be varied by the inclusion of a cylindrical portion between the end conical portions.
