Class 75(1) A liquid fuel burner in which nascent combustion products from the flame region are recycled to a point immediately downstream of where the fuel and air mixture is formed has the liquid fuel atomized by pressure air and the mixing and vaporization tube delivering to the combustion space is of divergent form, e.g. of greater conical angle than the atomized fuel spray, to avoid fuel particles impinging and coking on such tube and this mixing and vaporization tube is surrounded by a space through which nascent combustion products are drawn to be injected into the fuel/air stream. The burner comprises a bell-shaped member 1 mounting on its end wall the pipe 5 for admitting the liquid fuel and the atomizing air to the nozzle 14 which discharges into a diverging mixing and vaporization tube 17 of very high heat resistant material supported by radial webs 16 in a refractory lining 10 of a sleeve 8 mounted within the bell so as to provide an outer annular space for entry of combustion air from an inlet 15 on the skirt of the bell. A deflector 12 of half toroid form and fixed at the downstream end of the refractory lining 10 directs into the tube 17 a flow of nascent combustion products, induced to flow over the exterior of the tube 17 from the flame region of the combustion chamber by the injection action of the fuel spray at the narrow end of the tube 17.
