Abstract
599,257. Generating combustion products. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd., LLOYD, P., RICHARDS, A. D., ASHWOOD, P. F., and DARLING, R. F. April 15, 1944, Nos. 7011/44, 7060/45 and 7061/45. [Class 51 (i)] [Also in Group XI] A combustion apparatus suitable for use in gas turbine and jet propulsion motors comprises a liquid or gaseous fuel injection nozzle 12, Fig. 1, arranged in a flame tube 10 and projecting a jet or spray of fuel in the opposite direction to that in which air is rapidly flowing, an open based conical baffle 16 having a cruciform orifice 17 at its apex being provided to direct a current of air to the centre of the jet or spray. Additional air may be supplied to the flame zone at the point where the jet suffers reversal through a ring of apertures 18 in the baffle and radial slots in its flange 19..The nozzle 12 is mounted in the tube 10 on a support 11 formed with a passage 15 communicating with the fuel supply pipe 13. Fig. 3 shows another construction on which the nozzle 12 is carried by a U- shaped tube 30 supported by the radial supports 21 of the baffle 16 which is formed with openings 23 communicating with another cone 22 formed at the apex with cruciform openings 17. The baffle 16 is provided with a frusto-conical shield 24. A second nozzle 39 is provided beyond the first nozzle 12, no baffle member being necessary for this nozzle as the flame is stabilized by the flame from the nozzle 12. In another construction the shield 24 is cylindrical and two nozzles without baffle members are provided beyond the nozzle 12.
