Abstract

831,656. Liquid fuel burners. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. Sept. 27, 1967 [Oct. 9, 1956], No. 30811/56. Class 75(1) [Also in Group XII] In combustion equipment comprising a flame tube 11 within an air casing 10 and having a fuel injector 15 located at the inlet end of the flame tube and adapted to produce a conical spray of fuel, the injector 15 is surrounded by a cowling 17 having a straight through passage for part of the primary air and having a portion extending through the conical spray into the primary combustion zone, this portion being provided with circumferentially spaced apertures 19 so that a part of the spray passes uninterrupted through the apertures and the remainder is intercepted and carried to the down stream end of the cowling by the air flowing in the through passage. The cowling is cylindrical and its upstream end is disposed centrally of swirl vanes 14 surrounding the fuel injector and its downstream end is inturned to form a lip 18. The apertures 19 are axial closed-ended slots. The flame tube 11 is tubular and has secondary air inlet ports 12 in its wall. The air casing 10 may be either tubular or annular. In a modification the axial slots 19 are open at their downstream ends and the cowling has a series of circumferentially spaced inward projections carrying a ring in spaced relation from the fuel injector. In another embodiment both the air casing and the flame tube are annular, the fuel is injected by a series of nozzles mounted on a ring manifold and the apertured cowling comprises axial extensions of annular walls defining an annular air inlet passage to the flame tube. Each nozzle produces a flat outwardly directed spray and a flat inwardly directed spray, the flat sprays from all the nozzles combining to form a pair of conical sprays.
