Abstract
743,851. Burners. SHELL REFINING & MARKETING CO., Ltd. Dec. 10, 1953 [Jan. 23, 1953], No. 2089/53. Class 75(1). [Also in Group XII] Apparatus for the combustion of liquid or pulverised solid fuel comprises a chamber having one or more fuel injectors therein, the injectors supplying fuel into the chamber in the form of a divergent spray or sprays which lie within a substantially conical envelope. Two or more means are provided each for causing a succession of toroidal eddies surrounding the spray or sprays to be formed in the main air stream on a conical surface similar in form to and co-axial with the conical envelope of the spray or sprays. The combustion apparatus shown in Fig. 1 is suitable for use in a gas turbine engine and comprises a fuel injector 2 disposed in the chamber 1 and surrounded by sleeves 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 of increasing diameter and length. The sleeves are provided at their downstream ends with external lips 4a, 5a, 6a, 7a, 8a and two of the sleeves 6, 8 are additionally provided with internal lips 6b, 8b. Air passing between the sleeves forms toroidal eddies which pass along the chamber. A shroud 3 is disposed around the fuel injector to provide a stream of air which prevents the formation of deposit thereon. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2, four burners 12 are disposed in a chamber and a number of sleeves 14-22 of varying length and increasing radius are disposed concentrically in the chamber, the downstream ends of the sleeves being formed with lips which cause toroidal eddies to be formed in the air stream. The eddies formed by the lips on the sleeves 19, 20, 21, 22 lie on a conical surface which is similar in form to the conical envelope of the fuel sprays emitted by the injectors. The axial portions of the sleeves may be omitted, the toroidal eddying flow being produced by means of a number of flat rings such as 4a, 5a, 6a, 7a, 8a.
