Abstract
777,948. Generating combustion products under pressure. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Feb. 11, 1955 [Feb. 12, 1954], No. 4274/54. Class 51 (1). In combustion equipment for a gas turbine comprising a flame tube disposed within an outer air casing, a conduit is provided comprising an outlet pipe which leads off from and a return pipe which returns to the primary combustion zone of the flame tube. Means which include an ejector operated by a flow of air supplied to the combustion equipment are provided for creating a region of low pressure at the outlet end of the outlet pipe to cause in operation a flow of gas therethrough, means also being provided for supplying fuel to the outlet pipe upstream of its outlet to mix with the gases in the pipe. The flame tube 11 in Fig. 1 is disposed within an outer air casing 10 and is provided with a tubular extension 15 at its upstream end, a tubular member 18 being disposed coaxially within the extension. A perforated flange 20 is disposed between the member 18 and the extension 15. A bell-shaped baffle member 24 formed integrally with a radially-extending strut 29 is so disposed that its lip 25 is disposed between the upstream ends of the member 18 and the extension 15. Combustion air passing through the annular space 26 causes an ejector effect within the lip 25 of the bell, thus promoting a flow of gas from the inlet end 11a of the flame tube through the member 18. Fuel is injected into this gas flow by means of the injector 30, and the mixture of fuel and gas reverses and flows through the annular passage 21 between the member 18 and the extension 15. The mixture of fuel, gas and air enters the flame tube through the apertures in the flange 20. Webs 27, 28 are provided to position the extension 15 and the tubular member 18 with respect to the bellshaped member. Further air enters the flame tube through inlets 36, 37. The invention is applicable also to combustion equipment comprising an annular flame tube disposed within an annular air casing as well as to the tubular flame tube type equipment shown in Fig. 1.
