Class 75 (1) In an oil burning furnace a spray nozzle 26 feeds fuel into the bore of a refractory tube 16 disposed in the rear part of a tubular combustion chamber 12 separated by a space 25 from the front end of the nozzle, and affording either in its wall or between its wall and the surrounding casing 13 longitudinal passages 18 connecting the combustion zone with the space 25. The forward end 35 of the chamber 12 is tapered to increase the pressure in the combustion zone, so that combustion gases flow back through the passages 18 and preheat the fuel discharging through the nozzle. The fuel is vaporized to some extent by contact with and passage through the inner bore of the member 16. The passages 18 may be formed as shown as longitudinal bores or as longitudinal grooves in the outer periphery of the member 16. Oil is supplied through a pipe 27 disposed coaxially within an air feed tube 28 containing a venturi 30 having internal vanes 31 for directing a swirling air stream around the nozzle 26. Part of the air passes through openings 32 in the venturi wall to provide outer streams of air directed through diverging passages 33 for atomizing the oil stream. During the starting period gas may be supplied through an inlet 37 and a conduit 36 surrounding the oil tube 27.
