Abstract

<PICT:0827627/III/1> Apparatus for the oxidation of metalloids such as sulphur or phosphorus comprises an atomizing spray nozzle 2 opening into a mixing chamber 1 surrounded by an annular air chamber defined by walls 13 and 14 supplying air through an annulus surrounding said spray nozzle, and a primary combustion chamber 16 with a restricted outlet 17 into a secondary combustion chamber 18 supplied with air through ducts 20 from an annular manifold 21. The chamber 1 is surrounded by a sleeve 9 with apertured end walls 10 and 11 forming a recirculation jacket. Pressure in the chamber 16 causes some combustion gases to enter said jacket from which they are aspirated by air issuing from the annulus surrounding the spray nozzle. The latter is served by a pipe 3 branched from a feed circuit comprising inlet and outlet pipes 4 and 5, all said pipes being surrounded by a steam jacket 6.
