Abstract
712,808. Inductors. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Dec. 12,1952 [Dec. 18, 1951], No. 31537/52. Class 38(2) A high frequency inductor comprises a shell 10 and core 11 both of ferromagnetic material such as ferrite with a space 23 between in which coils 17 are placed surrounding the core. Air gaps are formed by a paper disc 13 and a gap 43 between the core 11 and shell 10. To vary the value of inductance, the reluctance of the flux path is altered by the vertical movement of a ferromagnetic tuning cylinder 36 which provides a by-pass to the air gap 43 for the flux. This cylinder has a threaded head 35 of non-conducting, non- magnetic material which screws into an aperture 32 of an insulating terminal plate 27. The tuning cylinder is locked in position by a set screw 37 which bears on a bent spring strip 38 lying in a transverse hole 39 in head 35 with its ends on the screw thread of aperture 32. The lowest position of the tuning cylinder may be determined by a fixed shoulder stop 33 or by an adjustable stop formed by split ring which screws into aperture 32, Fig. 4 (not shown). To give best results the radius PR of the core should be between 0.4 and 0.5 and the height HR of the shell should be between 1.0 and 1.25 times the outer radius R of the shell respectively.
