Abstract
580,782. Transformers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 20, 1944, No. 13904. Convention date, July 21, 1943. [Class 38 (ii)] A transformer for coupling high-frequency circuits in wireless receiving apparatus and which is provided with means for varying the self-inductance and mutual inductance of the windings comprises a body member 10 of copper, aluminium, or other non-magnetic conducting material having cylindrical recesses 11, 12 connected by a slot 32. In each-recess is a chamber 14 formed of magnetic material and preferably of powdered iron within which is a coil 18 wound on an insulating former 17. Fixed and movable tuning cores of powdered iron 20, 21.are arranged in each former 17 to enable the self-inductance of the coils to be varied. The body 10 acts as a one-turn link to couple the coils together, the tightness of the coupling being determined by the position of a threaded rod 34 in the slot 32. The rod 34 may be slotted throughout its length so that a maximum and minimum coupling may be obtained by a quarter revolution of the rod. A lock-nut may be provided to fix the rod in position and an adjustable screw may be fixed in the upper end of the slot 32 to limit the position of the rod and the maximum coupling between the coils.
