Abstract
615,555. Inductances. HOLZER, R. C. DE. March 9, 1946, No. 7402. [Class 38 (ii)] The Q value of an inductance having a dust core of permeability between 5 and 50 is decreased by introducing a small mass of ferromagnetic material of high resistivity and permeability between 5000 and 50,000 into a relatively weak part of the magnetic field. A coil 4 is wound on a bush 3 inside which is a magnetic dust core of two parts, a fixed part 2 and a part 1 movable by screw 9 for varying the inductance value. A wire 7 of high permeability is moved by a screw 8 in a groove 6 at one side of core part 2 in which the field strength is relatively small, the value of Q and dynamic resistance of the coil varying, but the inductance remaining substantially the same. The outer casing 5 may be of magnetic or non- magnetic metal. In an alternative construction, Fig. 4, a pair of curved strips 13 of varying width, of high permeability material, move in the leakage field of a coil 10 on a core 12 partially enclosed within a shell 11. Experimental results for coils of stated dimensions are given.
