Abstract
602,007. Inductances. DUMONT LABORATORIES, Inc., A. B. Aug. 1, 1945, No. 19791. Convention date, Aug. 22, 1944. [Class 38 (ii)] A variable inductance comprises a coil which may be moved relative to a core consisting of joined, cylindrical, coaxial portions of different magnetic permeability in which rigid studs are embedded to form supports for the inductance. A coil 7 is wound on a former 6 which may be made by winding a strip of impregnated paper and enclosed in a cylinder 8 of thin insulating material such as celluloid or mica. A core which is a tight sliding fit in former 6 is in two parts, one 4 of powdered magnetic material, and the other 3 of,insulating material. Copper or other non-magnetic metal rods 1, 2 are embedded at one end in parts 3, 4 respectively to form supports for the core and terminals for the coil 7 the ends of which are connected to the rods by flexible leads 10, 12. A strip 15 of insulating material is laid round the coil and has its 'ends joined together to form a tab 16 bv which coil 7 can be moved from one end of the composite core to the other to vary the inductance. A brass disc may be fixed to the outer end of core part 3 to reduce the minimum inductance value, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). Coil 7 may be of shorter length but of greater diameter. Fig. 3 (not shown). The non- magnetic part of the core may be made conducting, for example, of powdered carbon in an insulating shell, and the two adhering parts of the core may be connected in series or parallel with the coil 7, Fig. 5 (not shown).
