Abstract

706,397. Co-axial transmission lines. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Jan. 29, 1951 [March 22, 1950], No. 7215/50. Class 40 (8) To avoid impedance discontinuities, the parts of a sliding expansion co-axial line joint are so dimensioned that, assuming all parts to be at the same temperature, the ratio of the diameters of the inner and outer conductors, and hence the capacity, is substantially constant over the length of the joint. As shown, the sliding joint in the outer conductor is at J1 and that in the inner conductor at J2, the ends of the conductors being slit at S1 and S2. The lefthand section of the inner conductor is made of two parts of such diameters as to form a stepup at U1 in the same cross-sectional plane as the step-up between the sections of the outer conductor. In a similar manner, the outer conductor is stepped up at a point coinciding with the step-up at the joint J2 between the sections of the inner conductor. A protecting tube T, supported at its left-hand end from the outer conductor, extends over the joint J1, distance rings R and packing rings P being provided as shown.
