Abstract

603,234. Impedance matching. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. March 21, 1945, No. 7202. Convention date, March 22, 1944. [Class 40 (viii)] In order to match a load to the characteristic impedance Zo of a coaxial - line, a length of line substantially less than #/4 is included having an inner conductor of different radius and a consequent different characteristic impedance Zoo. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the matching length l, equal to #/8, has its diameter effectively increased by a sleeve 16 slidable along the inner conductor. Curves are given for obtaining the correct ratio Zoo/Zo and the requisite distance X of the sleeve from a voltage node 14, in terms of the reflection coefficient due to the mismatch of the load to the cable. The size of the sleeve is convenient for introduction into the usual type of cable whose supports for the inner conductor have #/4 spacing. Alternatively a portion having an inner conductor of restricted diameter may be used.
