Abstract
607,094. Modulating apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Jan. 25, 1946, No. 2538. Convention date, Aug. 19, 1944. [Class 40 (v)] High-frequency oscillations are distributed to or collected from a number of aerials or other circuits in turn by a sector-shaped rotary member moving past a ring of conductors connected to the respective aerials &c., and serving to couple them to a central conductor. As shown in vertical section in Fig. 4, and in cross-section along 5-5 in Fig. 5, the conductive sector 29 moves past a ring of four conductors 39 and couples thein in turn to a central axial rod 12. The rods 12, 39 are of half a wave length, and each is thickened at the end opposite to that at which sockets 22, 47 are provided for the feed lines. The sector 29 is separated by gaps from the remainder of the outer cylinder 24, and is connected to the inner cylinder 11 by flat radial members 30, 31 which line up with gaps 27 dividing the sector and the inner cylinders into two axiallyspaced halves. An intermediate cylinder 23 moving with the main, body is gapped at 32 to accommodate the live radial members 30, 31. The cylinders turn on ball bearings 35, 36 in a box or casing 4 fitted with shields 48. When the live sector 29 is opposite one of the rods 39 each half of the rod induces currents in the outer surface of the sector, and the radial members 30, 31 acting as a balanced line convey the energy to the inner surface of the inner cylinder 11 and to the axial rod 12. At the mean operating frequency, closed quarterwave sections are formed by the inner surface of the sector 29 and the outer surface of cylinder 23; and also between the inner surface of the cylinder 23 and the outer surface of the inner cylinder 11. Leakage currents are thus prevented at the mean operating frequency. The Specification discusses the relative values of the surge impedances of these quarter-wave lines necessary to obtain good impedance matching over a range of frequencies.
