Abstract

736,836. Aerials. DEPARTMENT OF SUPPLY, SECRETARY OF THE. Aug. 25. 1953 [Aug. 27, 1952], No. 23487/53. Class 40 (7) A wide band travelling wave aerial is constructed to have a progressively increasing resistance towards its free end to reduce standing waves. As shown in Fig. 1 such an aerial may be made of low-resistance sections 1 and 2 coupled together by resistances 3 preferably arranged to give exponential increase in resistance with length from the transducer. Two aerial units such as that shown in Fig. 1 may be arranged to extend at a small angular separation from substantially the same point to form a Vee aerial and two such Vee aerials set up with a divergence and characteristic such that the main lobes due to each add along the line bisecting the angle between the pairs of wires (Fig. 2, not shown). The use of lumped resistive elements 3 may be dispensed with and the aerial conductor itself compounded from sections of progressively increasing resistance. A Vee aerial of two such aerial units is shown in Fig. 3. For reception from or transmission to any desired direction a series of aerial units according to the invention may be arranged around a circle with the transducer ends inwards and coupling made to the required unit (Fig. 4, not shown). Scanning of the inner ends may be arranged.
