Abstract
706,261. Spanners. BRITISH TRANSPORT COMMISSION. July 11, 1952 [July 13, 1951], No. 16704/51. Class 61 A spanner for turning nuts which have spaced radial holes or notches instead of flats comprises two jaws each having a projection adapted to engage diametrically opposed holes or notches, a handle and cam means acting between the jaws to effect, closing of the jaws on torque being applied to the handle. As shown in Fig. 1 a jaw carrier comprises two metal plates held in spaced relation by rivets 13, 11, 12 on which are pivoted respectively a handle 17 and a pair of jaws 14. Each jaw has an inward projection 15 and may be provided with side flanges for engaging the faces of the nut or a spring plunger to engage a third hole in the nut. The tails 16 of the jaws extend along the sides of the handle and are connected by a spring 18 which urges the jaws into open position. The side edges of the handle 17 and inner edges of the tails 16 constitute the cam means. In a modification, Fig. 5, a handle 24 is fixed to side plates 25 and the jaws 28 are slidable on a rectangular guide bar 26 pivoted on a rivet 27 extending between the plates. Pins 32 extending between the side plates engage cam surfaces 31 on the jaws. In another modification one jaw is integral with the handle the second jaw being connected to the handle by a pair of pivoted links, cam surfaces being provided on the handle and second jaw.
