Abstract

A universal flange locking tool is attached to a flange 14 by utilizing two of the fixing studs or bolt holes around the periphery of the flange 14 to be locked. One of the fixing arms of the flange locking tool is provided with a pivot, which enables the tool to be attached to a wide range of flange shapes and sizes. An integral part of the tool is a sleeve, into which can be inserted a suitable lever to counter the force applied when tightening or loosening the flange fixing nut or bolt.

Description

UNIVERSAL FLANGE LOCKING TOOL This invention provides a means of anchoring or holding shaft flanges of a wide range of sizes and configurations, against the turning force required for tightening or loosening its fixing nut or bolt.
Drive flanges are often made to very close tolerances, the use of vise grips or similar to hold whilst tightening or loosening their fixings can result in damage to finely machined surfaces.
The most effective method used at present is a holding device made to fit the flange outer attachment studs or bolt.
The drawback to this method is the great variety of shapes and sizes of flanges used in all types of machinery and vehicles, which therefore, requires a vast array of differently shaped holding tools.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the enclosed drawing.
Fig.1. shows the flange locking tool.
Fig.2. shows the tool attached to a flange.
Fig.3 & 4. show the tool attached to different types of flange.
Referring to the drawing the tool comprises one fixed 10. and one pivoting arm 12. The ends of each arm are attached to two of the fixing holes or studs at the periphery of the flange 14. An integral part of the tool is a sleeve 15. Into which can be inserted a suitable lever.

Claims (3)

1. A universal shaft flange locking tool which when attached to the fixings studs or holes at the periphery of a flange will provide a secure means of holding or locking the flange to oppose the turning force applied when tightening or loosening the bolt or nut that attaches the flange to its shaft.
2. A universal flange locking tool as in claim 1. wherein the fixing holes, slots or grooves of the attachment points can be varied to suit a wide range of flange configurations.
3. A universal flange locking tool as in claim 1 and 2. In which provision is made for attachment of differing lengths of levers to suit differing torque requirements and confines of location.
