Abstract

It is tool designed to stop the crankshaft from turning whilst the front pulley bolt is being secured. The tool can also be used when loosening the bolt. The tool enables the mechanic to stop the engine from turning whilst the front pulley bolt is being done up, preventing the pulley from subsequently coming loose. The radius of the disc allows it to sit inside the face of the vehicle's crankshaft pulley, the hole in the centre of the disc allows a socket wrench to access the crankshaft pulley securing bolt. The pins in the steel disc protrude out and align to the holes which are located in the face of the pulley; the pins fit into the holes in the pulley face. The operator inserts a socket handle into the square hole and is able to exert counter pressure by way of a square directional pull on the handle in the opposite direction to the direction in which the front pulley bolt is being tightened or loosened as the case may be.

Description

HANDLELESS MOTOR VEHICLE PULLEY BRACE Field of the Invention.
The field of this invention is a tool designed specifically for the automotive industry and in particular used only on Subaru motor vehicle engine front crankshaft pulleys. The pulley is located externally on the forward end of the crankshaft.
This pulley brace will tit the front pulleys of the following Subaru engine codes: Subaru EJ15, EJ18, EJ20, EJ22, and EJ25.
It is a tool designed to stop the crankshaft from turning whilst the front pulley bolt is being secured. The tool can also be used when loosening the bolt.
The pulley brace is designed for a range of Subaru vehicles. They have a common problem of the front pulley coming Idose when work has been done on the engine and the front pulley bolt is not subsequently tightened to the correct torque setting.
The tool enables the mechanic to stop the engine from turning whilst the front pulley bolt is being done up, preventing the pulley from subsequently coming loose.
A previous attempt to solve the problem involved using a pinch bar or screwdriver to lock the flywheel's ring gear to stop the engine from turning whilst securing the front pulley bolt. Subaru vehicles have no such access through the engine casing to allow this.
As a consequence, this previous method is not effective on Subaru vehicles. The consequence is that front pulleys on Subaru vehicles come loose as without preventing the engine from turning, it is difficult to get the pulley bolt to the specified torque setting.
The tool consists of 5 parts. There is a disc which has a circular hole in its middle, a sduare hole on its perimeter and four pins. The square hole is located between two of the pins.
The radius in the disc allows it to be positioned directly against the crankshaft pulley whilst enabling a socket to access the front crankshaft pulley securing bolt.
The pins protrude from the disc and align with the four standard factory holes in the Subaru front crankshaft pulley. The square hole in the disc allows the operator to insert a socket handle into it. The tool so positioned enables a square directional pull on the handle to be made.
Please refer to figure 1 accompanying this application.

Claims

WHAT I CLAIM IS:
An apparatus for preventing the engine crankshaft of Subaru motor vehicles from turning whilst the front pulley bolt is being either undone or tightened to the correct torque setting.
The apparatus as claimed in claim 1, comprising a steel disc which has a hole in its middle, a square hole on its perimeter and four pins. The four pins protrude outwards from the disc at right angles. The square hole is located between two of the pins.
The apparatus as claimed in claims 1 and 2, wherein the radius of the disc allows it to sit inside the face of the vehicle's crankshaft pulley. The hole in the centre of the disc allows a socket wrench to access the crankshaft pulley securing bolt. The pins in the steel disc protrude out and align to holes which are located in the face of the pulley; the pins fit into the holes in the pulley face. The operator inserts a socket handle into the square hole and is able to exert counter pressure by way of a square directional pull on the handle in the opposite direction to the direction in which the front pulley bolt is being tightened or loosened as the case may be.
An apparatus substantially as described and as illustrated in the accompanying figurel .
