Abstract

703,721. Furnaces. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. July 30, 1951 [Nov. 16, 1950], No. 17978/51. Class 51 (1). [Also in Group XI] Apparatus for burning liquid fuel comprises a liquid fuel atomizer 1, an air chamber 3 with tangential air inlets 9 and a combustion chamber 2 made of refractory material, both chambers being formed as bodies of revolution, for example cylinders as shown, about a common axis and being connected by a centrally located orifice 5 having a diameter less than that of either chamber, and the fuel atomizer being located coaxially in the air chamber so as to spray the fuel in the form of a hollow cone through the orifice 5 and near the edge thereof into the combustion chamber which is shaped so that an imaginary continuation of the fuel cone would intercept its peripheral wall and so that toroidal vortices are set up both inside and outside the fuel cone. The outside vortex is formed near an annular ridge 4 at the entrance to the combustion chamber. Both vortices lead the burning mixture back to the fuel entering the combusiton chamber. The fuel is atomized by fuel pressure or by air or steam. The atomizer is surrounded by a pipe 6 which may convey a combustible gas.
