Abstract
1292705 Burners DR SCHMITZ & APELT INDUSTRIEOFENBAU GmbH 18 Aug 1970 [19 Sept 1969] 39757/70 Heading F4T An oil burner with a controllable heat output comprises an annular chamber 17 having a constricted outlet formed by wall portions 18, 19 and a nozzle assembly 12 positioned in the outlet and from which the atomized fuel issues in a cone; the primary air is divided into two portions, a controllable portion entering the chamber 17 radially and the remaining portion entering the chamber tangentially, the portions combining to form a swirling air flow around the nozzle assembly, while the secondary air flows parallel to the longitudinal axis of the burner around the annular chamber. The tangential air component enters the chamber 17 through tangential inlets 24 and determines the peripheral velocity of the swirl while the radial air component enters by an annular gap formed by an annular shield 21 and a shield plate 22 and determines the axial velocity of the swirl. The swirl angle is controlled by varying the width of the annular gap by moving the shield plate 22 axially, thus altering the ratio of air entering the chamber tangentially and radially. Adjacent the constricted outlet 18, 19 the annular chamber terminates in an annular wall 20 and the gap between the chamber 17, 18, 19, 20 and a burner housing 10 provides a passage for the axial flow of the secondary air. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the nozzle assembly 12 and chamber 17-20 are axially movable, the shield plate being fixed to the burner housing 10. In a further embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the burner is modified to operate with both liquid and gaseous fuel, either simultaneously or alternately, the wall portion 19 being provided with gas nozzles.
