Abstract

791,225. Air supply to burners. ORR & SEMBOWER, Inc. Feb. 7, 1956 [Feb. 23, 1955], No. 3761/56. Class 75(1) A burner comprises an air plenum having concentric primary and secondary air outlet orifices and a tube connecting the primary air orifice with the opposite end of the plenum, part of the plenum air flow passing to the secondary air orifice and a part being directed in radial streams into the tube and the remaining part of the air passed from the plenum through a passage into the tube in a stream flowing axially to the primary air orifice to turbulently mix with the radial air streams. Air is delivered tangentially into an air plenum 10 through a duct 16 provided with a central valve 32, part of the air then passing through a secondary air annular orifice 82 into the combustion zone 12, another part passing through a passage 58, controlled by a pre-set valve 59, into an air nozzle 60 whence it is introduced axially into a tube 70 to mix with the remaining part of the air from the plenum 10 which passes through radial vanes 112 of an air guide 110 to enter axially spaced radially disposed apertures 75, 76 in the tube 70 to mix with the axially flowing air stream from the nozzle 60 the resulting turbulent air stream passing through the primary orifice 86 where, if liquid fuel is used, it is mixed with fuel atomized by steam or air issuing through a nozzle 106. When gas is used it is supplied through a passage 62 and an annular chamber 64 into the air streams in the tube 70, the air supply through the duct 16 is controlled by a suitable streamlined valve 32, 34. The apertures 75, 76 are arranged in rows spaced at each end of the tube 70 the total area of the apertures 70 being about one fifth of the total area of apertures 76.
