Abstract

1414813 Vortex burners EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 3 Jan 1973 [12 Jan 1972] 299/73 Addition to 1341253 Heading F4T A combustion-chamberless vortex burner of the type disclosed in Specification 1,341,253, wherein the inlet air is divided into a first stream passing through an induction chamber 22 to give a helical primary air flow and a second stream passing through at least one annular gap 36 in refractory 27, 33 to give a secondary air flow, is provided with means to swirl the air flow through gap 36 to control flame expansion and obtain intimate mixing of air with liquid or gaseous fuel proximate the point of fuel injection by a gun 37. The secondary air flow may be directed in the direction shown, or perpendicular or parallel to the burner axis. A plurality of annular secondary air flow gaps may be provided or disclosed in Specification 1,341,253, in which case the gaps may have respective swirlers or a common swirler. The secondary air may be swirled in the same or opposite direction to the primary air. The secondary air swirler may comprise fixed vanes 41, or vanes 41 pivoted at 42 on a plate 40 which is manually rotatable by push-pull rods (46), (47), Figs. 1, 3, 4, 7 (not shown), to alter the inclination of the vanes 41 by the engagement thereof with fixed guiding pins 45. Plate 40 is supported on a plate 25 which is adjustably mounted via rods 32, whereby the width of gap 36 is adjustable.
