Abstract

1425367 Liquid fuel burners HEURTY SA and ELF-UNION 19 Feb 1973 [23 Feb 1972] 8016/73 Heading F4T In a burner having a fuel injector 3, heavy liquid fuel from a duct 13 flows along a needle 16 therein to form droplets at the tip thereof, the droplets being atomized by primary air directed from a duct 14 into duct 13 by helical passages 17, and the primary air/atomized fuel mixture being directed through an orifice 18 in a disc 12 to mix with secondary air exiting from an annular passage (4), Fig. 1 (not shown), around duct 14 via an annular slit (6) around the downstream end of injector 3. The external envelope of the atomized fuel jet has an apex angle of about 40 degrees and lies close to the tangent to a divergent portion (9) of a passage in which the injector 3 is located, and the flame produced is flared to a form approximating to a disc perpendicular to the burner axis. The secondary air passage (4) has a swirler (5), and the disc 12 is made of moderately heat conductive, refractory material, such as steel or ceramic. The orifice 18 of disc 12 has a convergent portion terminating in a flared portion blending the convergent portion with the downstream face of the disc 12, which face is planar or of concave or convex cone shape with an apex angle close to 180 degrees.
