Abstract

1,266,316. Swirl burner. DUNHAM-BUSH Inc. 28 May, 1970, No. 25686/70. Heading F4T. A gas or vapour burner 10 includes a cylindrical casing with an open discharge end disposed adjacent a combustion zone and a closed end, a fuel inlet tube 29 and an air inlet opening 20 for supplying pressurized air to mix with the fuel at a mixing zone, a truncated conical annulus 36 within the casing adjacent the open end and having a centre opening (36a) and fluid directing slots 35, and a plurality of concentric radially-spaced partition rings 25, 26, 27 between the annulus 36 and the closed end and coactive with the annulus 36 to form three discharge streams each from the air/fuel mixture ; a first inner non-swirling stream directed through the centre opening 36a of the annulus 36, a second rapidly swirling stream directed through slots 35, and a third non-swirling converging outer stream directed through the annular orifice 37. The burner 10 may be mounted against one wall of a heat exchanger 11 in a furnace casing 15 and be supplied with air by blower 16, the air entering intake manifold 21 through opening 20 and passing through adjustable orifices 24a, 23a into annular air chamber 32 thence dividing into two streams in ports 30 and 31 respectively. Ignition may be effected by discharge electrodes 40.
