Abstract

699,653. Shaft seals. REY, J., and LOMBART, L. May 1, 1951 [May 8, 1950], No. 10190/51. Class 122(v) A seal for a shaft bearing 2 that is filled with lubricant under pressure comprising a labyrinth seal located at each side of the bearing and comprising an outer ring 6 carried by the bearing housing and made of an elastic material such as rubber formed with a relatively thin inwardly projecting circular portion 6b that normally engages with substantial clearance a groove 4a in an inner ring 4 carried by the shaft 1 but which during the bearing filling process is caused by the lubricant pressure to engage and form a seal with the side of the groove 4a remote from the bearing. The portion 6b of the ring 6 is enlarged at its inner edge 6c by axially extending portions and the outer ring 4 is reinforced by a Z section metal ring 7 and a metal washer 8 carried thereby and has a thin lateral cylindrical portion 6d that closely surrounds a corresponding pprtion of the inner ring 4 and acts as a seal when the shaft is at rest. Pressure lubricant is introduced when filling through a central bore 16 and a radial bore 1c in the shaft and a passage 4e in the right hand inner ring 4 and escapes when the bearing is filled through passages 4e, 4f of the left hand inner ring 4 and past the cylindrical portion 6d of the left hand outer ring 6.
