Abstract
788,932. Stuffing-box substitutes. FIAT SOC. PER AZIONI, and BALDWIN, P. S. Sept. 6, 1954 [Sept. 7, 1953], No. 25803/54. Class 122 (5). The shaft 53 of a gear pump or other rotary hydraulic machine is sealed where it extends through the machine casing wall 52 by a ring 56 of resilient material, preferably rubber, pressed by resilient means, such as a helical spring 59, against a radial shoulder 55 formed on the outer side of the wall 52, the ring being rectangular in cross-section apart from its inner periphery which is arcuate. The spring is compressed between the bottom of a cap 61 screwed to the wall 52 and a cup 57, 58 surrounding the ring. The cap 61 may be replaced by a wire cage.
