Abstract

696,226. Television pick-up tubes; cathode materials and processing. CATHODEON, Ltd. Nov. 26, 1951 [Oct. 2, 1950], No. 24083/50. Addition to 688,904. Class 39(i) A television pick-up tube of the type described in the parent Specification is characterized in that both the photo-sensitive surface 21 and the collector electrode 9 are provided in the form of annular internal wall coatings on the tube envelope, the collector electrode being interposed on the envelope wall between the mosaic and the photo-sensitive coating. The photo-sensitive surface may be illuminated by a plurality of small electric lamps 22 which may be controlled individually or in groups by potentiometers or switches; the collector electrode 9 is preferably positive with respect to the photo-sensitive surface to accelerate the photoelectrons on to the mosaic. In manufacture the envelope may be provided with a small side tube 11 containing a magnetic carrier 12 and a charge 13 of antimony; a further side tube 14 contains caesium 15. The antimony may be lowered to the position 13a by magnetic means and evaporated to form coating on the shoulders 10 of the tube and on the end wall 19; the magnetic carrier can thus be withdrawn and the side tube 11 may be sealed off near the tube envelope without destroying the tube's vacuum. The side tube 14 may then be baked to distil the caesium on to the antimony deposits to form the photo-sensitive surface 21 and the photo-cathode 20; the side tube 14 is then sealed off and removed without destroying the vacuum. The activated surface may then be further sensitized by the addition of controlled amounts of oxygen.
