Abstract

696,094. Cathode-ray tubes. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. April 5, 1951 [May 20, 1950], No. 7896/51. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(i) A cathode-ray tube, especially for television, has a thin transparent glassy layer of phosphor material on the internal side of the tube face, and a coating of a light-absorbent material is provided on the phosphor layer. The object is to obtain a screen providing a high contrast. The phosphor layer is transparent and glassy in the sense of having a non-diffusing character with respect to light rays, although the material of the layer may have an organized crystalline structure in the chemical sense. The phosphor layer may, for example, be produced by volatilizing the phosphor material and precipitating it in a vacuum. The light-absorbent layer may be carbon deposited as lampblack from a source such as an acetylene flame, or aluminium or antimony deposited by evaporation in a low pressure atmosphere.
