Abstract
866,150. Luminescent materials and screens; cathode-ray tubes. FERRANTI Ltd. Feb. 9, 1960 [Feb. 25, 1959], No. 6510/59. Class 39(1). Method of forming a layer of transparent phosphor material, comprising a base material and an activator material, on a glass substrate such as the face-plate of a C.R.T., includes the steps of forming a transparent layer of the base material on the glass substrate, forming ions of the activator material, and accelerating the ions sufficiently to cause them to impinge on the layer of base material with sufficient energy to diffuse or penetrate into the lattice sites of the base material. In the apparatus shown in the Figure the glass substrate 1 carrying a layer 2 of potassium magnesium fluoride is mounted in a chamber 3 which includes an electrically heated crucible 4 containing manganese chloride 5. An electron gun assembly 6 with associated anodes 7 is mounted in an extension 8 of the chamber 3, a collector electrode 9 being mounted on the opposite side of the chamber, and a grid electrode 10 extending across the chamber. The chamber 3 is evacuated and the crucible 4 is heated to cause the manganese chloride to fill the lower part of the chamber with manganese chloride vapour. The dissociated manganese ions are accelerated towards the layer 2 of potassium magnesium fluoride by the grid electrode 10 which is maintained at a negative potential with respect to the crucible 4 by the battery 11. The glass substrate so treated may be fitted on the glass screen of a C.R.T. Alternatively the transparent phosphor layer may be applied directly to the glass screen of a C.R.T. by applying a transparent layer of the phosphor base material to the screen of the C.R.T. and thereafter introducing a beam of ions of the activator material through the neck of the tube and causing the beam to diverge and strike the base material by means of an electrostatic lens mounted in the neck of the tube.
