Abstract

680,404. Cathode-ray tube. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Jan, 22, 1951, [March 11, 1950], No. 1610/51. Class 39(i) A screen, more particularly for an image intensifier, comprises a layer of fluorescent material, which is carried by a transparent support, and is spaced from a further photoelectric layer by an intermediate conducting transparent layer which is chemically inert to the photoelectric material. The glass envelope of the image intensifier comprises three parts sealed by rings 2 welded to rings 4, 5 of an alloy of nickel, cobalt and iron and clamped together through intermediate gold gaskets by bolts. The aluminium input screen 8 carries a layer of zinc sulphide, which may be embedded in glass, on which is deposited tin oxide or silicon oxide formed by applying the chloride, fluoride, nitrate or sulphate of tin or dibutyltin dichloride to the heated screen e.g. a solution consisting of specified proportions of tin chloride, water, acetone mixed with a concentrated solution of hydrochloric acid sprayed onto the screen at a temperature, e.g. 640‹C. which is higher than that at which maximum conductivity is produced. Alternatively, the heated screen may be sprayed with the vapour of silicon tetrachloride and then heated and cooled in a muffle furnace containing town gas. Alloy caps 11, sealed to tubular extensions 12, carry lead-in wires and supports 9 for the screen 8 and seven focusing electrons 13. Following degassing and exhaustion of the tube, antimony from a capsule is condensed on to the oxide coating followed by caesium from a second capsule axially arranged temporarily in front of the screen. The output screen 7 comprises a glass window internally coated with zinc cadmium sulphide backed by aluminium.
