Abstract

695,556. Rotary pumps; fans. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Jan. 24, 1951 [March 3, 1950], No. 5470/50. Class 110(i) and 110(ii) [Also in Group XXVII] Means to reduce pulsation in a fluid while it is being pumped comprise separate chambers connected respectively to the pump inlet and outlet ports, and varying the volume of each chamber substantially in phase with changes of pressure occurring therein and in proportion to the pressure. As shown, a totary pump 3 has inlet and outlet ports 1, 2 connected with chambers 4, 5 separated by a flexible diaphragm ,6; which may be rubber, supported By a spring 11. In place of the diaphragm a piston or other movable means may be used and the piston may be moved mechanically or otherwise. A number of separate diaphragms may be used in place of a single one. When used with a fan, the chambers 4, 5 may be placed further away from the inlet and outlet ports 1, 2 to give longer connecting passages. To reduce noise due to pulsations, the passage'lengths may be calculated so that each is a multiple of the wavelength of the fundamental pulse frequency of the fan.
