Abstract
3688. North, O. D. Feb. 14. Fixed - abutment type, piston having ouiwardly - sliding vanes. The piston vanes are pressed outwards into contact with the walls of the working chamber by the working fluid, which is conducted to the piston-vane pockets by ports in the rotor and the end walls of the stator. Throughout the major part of a revolution, the vanes are pressed upon by fluid conducted from the high-pressure port of the engine or pump, but when a vane is passing the low-pressure port, i.e. the exhaust of an engine or the suction of a pump, and in order to put the vane in equilibrium while being moved inwards by the cam-surface of the working-chamber, the vane is pressed upon by fluid taken from the low-pressure port. Fig. 3 shows a suitable arrangement of ports for a non-reversing pump. The pockets o communicate with long ports m, which are open to the delivery ports g, except when a vane is passing one of the inlet ports f, and then the pocket in which that vane slides communicates with a short port n and so receives pressure fluid from the port f. The concentric parts such as h, i of the walls of the working chamber are connected by eccentric portions which extend across the inlet and outlet ports. In the pump shown in Fig. 4, there are three sets of concentric parts h, d, i of the walls of the working chamber. An outlet is placed at the end of the largest part h, and a second outlet at the end of the intermediate part d. A more regular discharge is obtained in this way. Other arrangements of the ports for admitting steam behind the vanes adapted for reversing-pumps are described.
