Abstract
1,001,738. Rotary vacuum pumps. NEW YORK AIR BRAKE CO. April 1, 1964 [April 3, 1963], No. 13363/64. Heading F1F. A rotary-vacuum pump comprises three pumping units 17, 18, 19, Fig. 2, of gyrating piston type, mounted on a common shaft 21 with the end units 17, 19 identical with each other and approximately half the length of the intermediate units 18. Each unit comprises a circular cam 23, Fig. 1, eccentrically mounted on the shaft 21 and closely embraced by a strap 24 formed with a valve piston 25 guided in a circular guide pin 26 supported at its ends in a removable partition of the housing 11 and an end cover therefor. To provide a shoulder on which the partition rests the unit 18 is slightly less in diameter than the units 17, 19 and in compensation therefor slightly more than twice the length of each of these units. Air from the chamber 36 to be evacuated is sucked through a cored opening 27 and port 28 in the valve piston 25 into the pumping chamber 22 and discharged through a valved outlet 31. The pump units 17, 18, 19 may be connected in parallel to the chamber 36 or alternatively the pump units 17, 18 may be connected in parallel and discharge into the unit 19 so that the pump operates as a two-stage pump. The mass of the cam 23 of the unit 19 is identical with that of the unit 17 and half that of the unit 18 with the masses identically distributed except that the cam of the unit 18 is 180 degrees out of phase with respect to the units 17, 19 so that during operation of the pump, the pump is rotationally balanced. The three valve pistons may all be directed upwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, or alternatively the valve piston of the unit 18 may be directed downwardly. Each unit is surrounded by a water jacket 33 having an inlet 34 and an outlet 35. It is stated that much higher pumping speeds and greater volumetric displacements may be achieved.
