692,743. Optical objectives. WREATHALL, W. M., and TAYLOR, TAYLOR, & HOBSON, Ltd. March 4, 1952 [March 9, 1951], No. 5742/51. Class 97 (i). A corrected objective comprises a front refracting member air-spaced from a meniscus rear member having its spherical outer surfaces concave to the front and its front surface centrally coated and rear surface annularly coated so as to be reflecting, so that light entering the objective through the front member will be refracted at the curved outer zone of the front surface of the rear member, reflected successively by the said annular and control reflecting portions and will emerge by refraction at the curved central zone of the rear surface. Numerical data are given for one example of the objective shown in which all the surfaces of the front member are spherical, for one example in which the surface R<SP>1</SP> is aspherical and of the form x = a 2 y<SP>2</SP> + a 4 y<SP>4</SP> + ... , and for one example in which the two elements of the front member are cemented together, the rear surface of this doublet being aspherical.
